This is a fascinating book, not just because Purdom knows how to put together a well-paced, character-driven story but because of how modern it feels. It’s all-but impossible to view this in isolation from Star Trek and the way Jenorden and crew explore their experiences, without Starfleet’s comforting military framework, is engrossing precisely because of the fragility of the crew. Especially in their first interactions with the alien species, Horta.
Today was an eventful day. If you missed it, the finalists for the 2021 Hugo Awards were announced! Among them is Alasdair Stuart, the man behind The Full Lid.
In The Full Lid, Stuart talks about pop culture, his own work, and many other interesting tidbits – including one of our own books, I Want the Stars by Tom Purdom! Stuart discusses the nuances of society, social structures, the approach taken towards cultural education, and more in Purdom’s book. These two Hugo Award finalists, Purdom and Stuart, are in good company with one another.
I Want the Stars is journey back to the roots of modern SF. It’s a glimpse into a future filled with hope, optimism, and above all: humanity.
